The Body Magnetic
Since using magnets for healing has become popular, there are now a lot of pages on the Web about magnets, how they are thought to work, and the magnetic nature of the human body. Unfortunately most of it is completely undocumented. Books have the same problem. I have found only two which treat this subject in a way that looks to me responsible. Chapter 3 of Becker's Cross-Currents (see The Body Electric) presents "the scientific evidence for the existence of electromagnetic energy systems within the body that control growth and healing, regulate the level of activity of the brain, and produce vitally important biological cycles by deriving timing information from the natural electromagnetic environment of the Earth." (p. 86.) But Becker is more focused in this book on the electrical systems of the body, and the book predates the current interest in using magnets for healing. The best book that I have found on the subject is Healing with Magnets, by Gary Null (Carroll & Graf Publishers, New York, 1999). But even that is mostly empirical and anecdotal. I'm still looking for a good examination of the magnetic nature of the body which is carefully documented. In the meantime, Gary Null's website Biomagnetic Healing has most of the information his book does (leaving out some of the anecotal parts) with references. Though Null's work is about using magnets for treatment, it has indirect implications for how the body inherently uses magnetism. Since the book unfortunately lacks an index, I recommend using the site for conducting searches. See also my pages
