Electromagnetic Sensitivity
A connection? An unclear number of sufferers of MCS show sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation; some say as many as half. Dr. William Rea, founder of the Environmental Health Center in Dallas and author of four medical texts on chemical sensitivity, has included testing for electromagnetic senstivity in his treatment program, after discovering his own hypersensitivity. Another connectionBecker also links exposure to abnormal electromagnetic fields to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, mentioning that CFS "has been found to be widespread in the electronics industry, particularly in Silicon Valley in Northern California." (Cross-Currents, p. 253) My experienceFor a long time I've always felt better when the sun sets the minute it crosses the horizon, in fact. Years ago I mentioned this to a nutritionist who sees a lot of people with MCS; he concluded I was sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. But at that time, this was just too weird for me to think about. How can you get away from it? Finally, after listening to the story of one woman with severe MCS, who can't stand being inside any building that has electrical circuits, I somehow became able to take seriously that statement by the nutritionist. My husband noticed there was old unshielded wiring running right under my side of the bed; he rewired that circuit and immediately the headaches I always had on rising decreased 90%. I already used a battery-powered alarm clock because it's more useful in power shortages; now I switched to keeping a little flashlight beside the bed, instead of the plug-in lamp. After increasing headaches from working on my computer, I got a LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor. The regular CRT (cathode ray tube) screens emit raditation (just like a TV); but the LCD technology does not. Before I switched, I could work for three or maybe four hours before the headache was too strong to continue. Now I can work all day without one. I started to use therapeutic magnets for other kinds of pain, and found they work amazingly well for me on muscle spasm, and reduce the terrible pain of the headaches I get when my liver shuts down. Next I started reading about the effects of microwave radiation on the molecules of the food it heats (not to mention the effects of the radiation itself on you if your oven leaks); here are some reports. I can't say whether strategies like this would help other MCS sufferers, I'm no doctor and am not suggesting treatment. For me this has been a big help. See also my pages
